  1. It's a model that works when the people the US is supporting are motivated to fight for themselves. Korea was one of those situations, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq were not. Ukraine is also one of those situations where this works. The thing is, in the situations where it did not work, we really knew that it wouldn't, or at least some people did. George H. W. Bush was correct in his decision not to take over Iraq after the Gulf War. George W. Bush was wrong in his decision to invade Iraq. That country, as is true with many in that area of the world, is a mess. There are ethnic tensions that no amount of military power would resolve, unless one was willing to commit genocide. This is, of course, a hangover from the imperial period when the European powers created most of these states. Blame it on the Brits. They deserve it.
