I think everyone underplays the Turkey factor. Erdogan would love to recreate the Ottoman Empire, at least in part, especially going into the oil producing regions. Actually, Turkey becoming a regional power is something I got from Peter. I think that Syria is just a first step. The HTS militants in the street are shouting (paraphrasing), "On the Jerusalem, on to Mecca". It is really up to the Europeans to deal with this. I think they might be more interested in dealing with the Turks than the various Arab groups.

@darkfool2000 Fully agree with you on that. The critical thing is your last sentence. They can't. Just as an aside and a little bit of a rant (my favorite thing) the whole EU is just an abortion. The EU wants to take credit for keeping the peace in Europe since WWII (well, at least until the situations in Yugoslavia and Ukraine, etc.). They ignore the 500K US troops that were stationed there (shrinking to "only" 300K) during the Cold War. Now the number has started to increase again, reaching 100K now (and growing?). If you are sharp eyed, you may notice that those conflicts came after the Cold War as the US drew down its troops and as the EU would be expected to "keep the peace" according to their narrative. On the economy they have been no more successful. There have been Europeans who wanted to unite the continent in the past, only they had a different approach. I am thinking France in the early 19th century and Germany in the early 20th century. They had some hope of doing it. The EU in the 21st century, no way.
