I think the answer will be immigration. We didn't populate the continent or industrialize using mostly DAR WASPs. The reaction to immigrants in the past was about what it is now. We will get over it somehow. I also wonder if the birth rate will stay as low. I am a boomer (watch it sonny) and my kids were born later in my life than in my parents' generation. I saw one commentary where, I think it was Jordan Peterson, it was stated that if a woman doesn't have kids by 30 it is over. My two kids were born when my wife was 34 and 37. I saw a lot of that going on around me. I think we have the whole age thing wrong. On that front I am seeing statements like 60 is the new 40 (and grey is the new blonde, lucky for me). Also, the actuaries will tell you that if you reach 65 today you have a 50% chance of living into your 90s. There is no precedent for this. I mention this because I think there is a general misuse of statistics when talking about populations. Statistical methods are great when talking about things where the underlying dynamics do not change. Making predictions from statistics when that is not the case is just plain silly. I have been dealing with statistics since the third quarter of the last century of the last millennium (I love to say it that way, drives my kids crazy) so I have seen a lot. Good and bad.
