Your characterization of how wars go for the Russians is a bit simplistic. For example, it doesn't work for many wars going back to at least the Crimean War. It doesn't work for Russo-Japanese War, WWI, the Polish-Soviet War and Afghanistan. It worked once in very different conditions. One thing you should notice is that these wars that failed were all wars of aggression directed outward. The "Great Patriotic War" and the French invasion of Russia led by Napolean were wars of conquest by outside powers moving into Russia. They were defeated as much by the terrain in Russia as anything else. It is important, in statistics, which is what these analyses are based on, the take into account the many factors that make up the dataset and their interaction.
