  1. It's Common Agricultural Policy. That policy is one of the reasons Norway did not fully join the EU. Their farmland is not great, and they believed that it would be the end of indigenous agriculture. The statement about the EU farmers thinking about Europe as "their captive market" says it all. It is, as I think this guy with a beard who travels a lot is fond of saying, a protectionist cartel. The issue with American agriculture is all of what Peter says, but it is also a "chlorinated chicken" issue. This is real. Chlorinated chicken was an issue in discussions between Americans and Europeans in the debate around TTIP that I participated in (mostly with a German group). It is still brought up today and is, if I recall correctly, an issue in the UK/US trade talks. The odd thing is that they wash some vegetables with chlorine in the EU, I am fairly certain. Of course, it is shorthand for protectionism, which the Europeans are always quick to point out if the US does something.
