The USS Enterprise just a testbed? I always say that I miss the Cold War. I told a colleague of mine that. My reason was that I got to do a lot of interesting, cutting-edge research with unlimited budgets. He retorted that he missed the Cold War as well because he got to kill people. He was a F-4 pilot on the Enterprise flying missions over Vietnam. You might want to update your information.

@vicomte5047 That could be the case. On the other hand, that was the sixth one built, so I don't think so. Maybe he will clarify.

@vicomte5047 That does not comport with their actual service in the war. The Yorktown class carriers were all active during the war. The early carriers fielded by both Japan and the US were, in fact, converted from other types of ships. In general, that was done because naval treaties signed years before the war did not in general address carriers. As with most weapons systems during WWII there was rapid development and massive production.
