  1. Fully agree that the EU is experiencing and existential turning point. As for the EU being a peace project, come on man. If the US were not there amid the threat of the Soviets to the east, there would certainly have been more wars. It wasn't the EU. The EU we know today came into being AFTER the fall of the Soviet Union. I do have a problem with the "rule of law" comments you and many others make. While I may not like or agree with some of things the countries you are talking about do, the use of the term is a little disingenuous. Does this "law" come down from God? Come on man. The only way this works is in a truly federal system like that of the US. The abortion of a system the EU has was never slated to succeed. That is why some in the EU want to push for ever tighter integration. The problem is that they won't tell the people what that really means, which is a loss of national sovereignty. How many in the EU, made up of countries with centuries of history and disparate interests, would vote for that necessary integration? The EU does not provide common defense or a common tax system. When the majority disagrees with a country, the only real punishments they can mete out are fines or the withholding of subsidies. Is this how you understand rule of law? Whose law? Who enforces that law? The real alternative is to take the EU back to the status of a trading block. Some have called for that. It makes more sense given their history.
