  1. Oh, and another thing. Just because Putin says he want to/is going to do something does not make it so. Just look at the Ukraine War. He said they would take Kiev in three days (or at most a couple of weeks). Autocrats like Putin and Xi are not analytical. Frankly, they are just plain stupid. Their skill is gaining and keeping power within their respective systems. This is a far shot from what is needed to be successful in war or economics. Just look at Hitler if you want an example of how a dictator can screw it up.

  2. The big flaw in Peter's argument is that if Putin calls a general mobilization he is done. He literally won't survive. That is one reason he hasn't done it so far. As for the Chinese backing him in a meaningful way, that is laughable. Chinese military tech is a pale copy of Soviet/Russian equipment. That means that basically it's trash. In addition, the scenarios Peter always brings up about how China will collapse are immediately brought into effect. You can discount the experience of WWII. Russia had many, many more people of military age then, and as with most of the world, a growing population. They are already having trouble keeping the lights on because they lack the people and equipment to maintain their systems. Also in WWII, the Soviets got massive amounts of equipment from their western allies.
