The worst wasn't that they didn't see it coming, that would've been the good part. The bad part is it won't have been instantaneous. Also, I doubt methanol from after shave would build up that much in a place where people do walk in and out, especially without anyone smelling anything. Also, it burns almost invisibly. My guess would indeed be a gas leak - we add a horribly smelling compound to gas here, but perhaps they don't do that over there so they might not have smelt owt. Either way, poor sods. Horrible way to go.

Never ever do this or have this done. Just invest in good, new (never buy used) tyres, they're the only contact you have with the road. Driving is very expensive, something you'll simply have to accept. Don't cheap out, it's not worth the risk.

As someone who has worked on them, that's exactly what you do. Or rather, have a professional do it for you. If you're not, just stay at a safe distance.

 @AzalofForossa It's allowed on lorries in my country (it was part of my job ages ago) but I wish it wasn't. Just another excuse for customers to cheap out, not giving a toss about the risk.

I've done this professionally. In my country, east of the Atlantic, this is only allowed on lorry/HGV tyres, **not** on those flimsy car tyres. Is that legal in the US?
