The worst wasn't that they didn't see it coming, that would've been the good part. The bad part is it won't have been instantaneous. Also, I doubt methanol from after shave would build up that much in a place where people do walk in and out, especially without anyone smelling anything. Also, it burns almost invisibly. My guess would indeed be a gas leak - we add a horribly smelling compound to gas here, but perhaps they don't do that over there so they might not have smelt owt. Either way, poor sods. Horrible way to go.

@masaokakihara9316 I was a bit off, it was methylated spirits (denatured alcohol) that I was thinking of. You're absolutely right about the additive.
