For Trump, and his supporters, it is, as you said, "a cardinal sin [to] relay facts to the American people." Facts are nasty, to Trump, because facts show him to be not at all able to handle this defining time in his presidency. Hundreds of people have died, from Coronavirus, and thousands are diagnosed. That's not sensationalism. If it seems sensational, it's only because real life trumps Trump.
