It would be really hard for such a movie to work. If it did choose a side, the other half would be alienated, as Drinker said. I guess they could go the "Tora!Tora!Tora!" route, but that would be reaching for the stars. If they gave more character development, then eventually those characters would have to comment on what was going on, and how they felt about it, and why they cared about it. So we'd be right back to talking about the actual conflict, which would mean picking a side or reaching for the stars. I guess we shouldn't be surprised that it ended up the way it did.
