When LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act, the Dixiecrats and former Southern Democrats fled to the Republican party. They felt betrayed because the Act allowed for integration and more rights in general for African Americans. LBJ said, "We have lost them for a generation." Only it was much longer than that. Those Republicans never forgave the Dems, and raised their kids to also despise everything Democrats did. Something similar happened with Obama being elected President: Instead of Dixiecrats leaving the party, the Republicans vowed to never, ever forgive Democrats; and never trust them, and hate everything about them. Remember, one of the main goals of the Triple-K was to make sure African Americans (former slaves and their children) never got into a position of power; but were always kept down, since those K-people could never accept that slavery was over, and they were wrong.
