"little children out of the city, and mocked him"--Not teenagers in their 20s. "Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys." --The Hebrew word used for "mauled" translates as "To cleave, to rend, break, rip, open." They were not "gang members." They were children. The Hebrew word from which we got "boy" translates as "A boy, lad, youth." Don't try to twist this. It says what it says. Own it. God punished them because they made fun of Elisha, Elijah's replacement. But God still still had bears rip them apart.

@TRD-667 They either really don't know, and didn't bother to check first, or they were hoping no one else would check. :)

@TRD-667 Elisha counted, apparently, while he was rolling around on the ground laughing. Doesn't the bear thing, and the fiery serpent thing remind you of slapstick? Imagine all those kids being chased, screaming, running, bears roaring; and the fiery(!?) serpents chasing the Israelites: I hear "Yakety Sax" playing. It's like Benny Hill or Keystone Cops.

That's exactly why it was made our national motto, and inserted into our national pledge.

It's a pretty hilarious part of the Bible actually. Comes out of nowhere, makes no sense, and isn't referred to again.

Agreed. That's what's at the core of these people. They want to be God. That's how the serpent tempted Eve in the story.

@adamcarreras-neal4697 Bless you for what you have done. Some people, like the person above you, generalize way too much. You've helped people, who will pass on that help to others, who will also pass it on. Reminds me of the song we used to sing in Sunday School: "Pass it On."

@TRD-667 Bears like me. :)

@johnson8242 Haha! Okay, I want to share something funny with ya. So Elisha called down a curse from God on these kids, for calling him "baldy." Right? And it's weird that 2 bears resulted. A few other people have called down curses from God, and sometimes God would send a curse without it being called. My favorite was God's curse of "fiery serpents." (Numbers 21:4-9.) The Israelites were murmuring against Moses, as usual (which I always found hilarious), and God got fed up their whining. lol. People take the Old Testament way too seriously.

The whole I-hate-you-because-of-that-one-thing schtick is kind of a short cut to thinking. Wouldn't you say? Agree with this; don't agree with that--doesn't mean you have to banish the person to exile for something you disagree with. But hey, knock yourself out.
1
@phil1758 You feel that way because of that one thing? How many people make it through your weeding-out process? You realize, everyone is wrong at some point; everyone is bad at some point; everyone is an ultra maroon at some point. Including you. So do you find yourself repulsive?

They do. A lot of citizens don't, though. It's similar to how some Europeans see what Trump supporters say and do, and assume all Americans are like that.

@verlongates2279 I don't know what Christian mainstream is, or would be, or where it would be located, and who would speak for them--but plenty of Christians have disavowed the Nationalists. There's one in this very video, and I'm assuming @peggybrown9224 is one as well. Personally, I neither believe nor believe; I only know or don't know.

HAHA! My favorite comment of the day. Congrats. :)

Yeah, it's like they never stopped believing in Santa Claus, or the Easter Bunny: not exactly something to be proud of.

They just don't know their Bible. "“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD" (Isaiah 55:8). You can't really know what God thinks or wants, which makes sense. Right? I mean, we're finite; God (in the stories) is infinite. So, it would be like the legs on a flea, on the back of a dog, knowing what the phase of the moon is, as it orbits the earth, on which is the dog. :)

@johnscaramis2515 "And I take a guess what your answer to this logical problem will be: god works in mysterious ways..." You mean you assumed, because of your confirmation bias, what my response will be...in the future, which you didn't know. I am not a believer. Don't assume I am. How can believers push their beliefs? Because they want to be right. They want to hide their insecurities. Same as a lot of people.
1
@johnscaramis2515 Yeah? I'm an intellectual. I read all kinds of books, including the Bible. And I'm a writer. I write all kinds of things, including essays on topics I like, for which I do research. One of those topics is the Bible. But I don't believe. I just know what it says in the writing.
1
@johnscaramis2515 So your question is how do I know if the Bible is or isn't a test, to see how acquiescent people are. Answer: I don't; would seem like a silly thing for an infinite being to do though. And you go on to say that. And then you ask why he'd make the test, which you're asking or claiming he's making. YOU invented the idea of this test. Then you say the test is silly. Yes, you are silly.

@aramis2515 Most discussions about the Bible rarely make it past beliefs, when there's a mix of believers and disbelievers. It's a shame. Imagine if every story had people who take every word in it literally. For example: Superman really exists, and came from Krypton. We'd never actually get to any Superman stories. That's why I never believe or disbelieve. I know; or I don't know. I enjoy the text for what it is.

They're Paulines, i.e., followers of Paul: who taught that all you need to be a Christian was to believe in virgin birth, died and was resurrected for our sins. Don't need to be humble, or merciful, or forgiving. Just believe in a couple supernatural things, and you're good.

I don't know that I agree with "nothing but misery." Nothing means zero. In order for that to be true, there would have to be a complete lack of positive ramifications of its use and mere presence for all time. And just one example of something positive would refute it. Sounds like hyperbole to me. I'm not denying that people have used it to bring misery. I would even go so far as to speculate that it has caused more misery than any man-made thing in history....or maybe that's going too far, too. That would be a crazy, in depth thing to study. Good luck!
