  1. If the apostles did have guns, the guards would have had more guns. Peter did come armed with a sword. He used it to defend Jesus, by cutting off an ear from one of the soldiers. (There was, by the way, an entire regiment of Roman soldiers.) But Jesus told him, "Put away your sword. He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword." I think that can be said just as easily today about guns. So Hoebert couldn't be more wrong.

  2. Pontius Pilate (Roman governor over Judaea) had said he saw no wrong in Jesus. When the Pharisees insisted further, Pilate "washed his hands" of the whole thing. So the government didn't kill Jesus. The church did.

This is from Deuteronomy 32:39: "See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand." God does all of it. God is everything. (According to the Biblical text.)
