A lot of Americans haven't gotten over "the Red Scare." They associate Communism and Socialism with specific governments: hence Russia, Venezuela, etc. And they don't understand that there's more than one kind of Comunism, and/or Socialism. All of that requires way too much thinking. Capitalism is so much easier: make money, spend money; no money, can't do things. * Really, I think that's why so many Americans aren't ready for Bernie: requires way too much thinking.
