For closet racists, I imagine saying the n-word around their other racist friends is just as common as when closet sexists refer to women as (whatever they refer to them as). It's a joke in certain company, a way of bonding with others who are like yourself--i.e., who are against another segment of the population. But it's a weak argument, as seen in this example: Say you're talking with your friends, and always refer to your boss as (whatever derogatory term). Then you go to work and, when alone with the other workers, call your boss that same term. But you find yourself alone with the boss, and call him a bleep-bleeping bleep-hole? I doubt that very much.
