  2. @marionabbot7173 Good catch! After Cain killed Abel, God cursed Cain and put a mark on him, so he'd wander the Earth forever alone. But Cain went off immediately and found a wife. The whole story is in Genesis 4:8-17. So, you're right, taking the Bible literally all the time is pretty silly. The safest bet is to take it as mythology: Then it all makes perfect sense. (Kinda like Zeus turning into a swan to a seduce a human woman. Was the woman really into swans?)

Regardless of whether or not a person is religious, morality has always been part of society, and everyone knows naturally the difference between what's good and what's bad. It's just that some people choose to what's bad.

Jesus said, "No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man" (John 14:6). The ancient Israelites believed in Sheol. "Going to heaven" is an invention by the church, likely because of Dante.

So she paused for a couple seconds, then said he was an "Arab." He's obviously not an Arab. But I don't know. Maybe she meant to say that. It was a conspiracy going around at the time. But that conspiracy had its roots in bigotry.

  15.  @6ixConfessions  There are exceptions, of course. Nothing is absolute. A lot of what you list there are thought to be morals, according to the time and place. When that time and place (and culture) changed, so did the mores. Morality is not mores (i.e., social customs and norms). I guess you could always counter with something else. I just felt a hopelessness wash over me with this. Suddenly, convincing you isn't the least bit important to me. If you believe morality is open to interpretation, nothing I say will change that. So fudge it. Believe what you want.

  20. Sorry, but it is "the life." Here's the full verse: "Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me"" (John 14:6). Jesus was also call the light many times in John. So that's probably what you're thinking of. No biggie. Even their broken clock is right twice per day. :)

Problem is: I think everything that can be available in a library should be. That's what a library is for. As long as the school doesn't mandate a state religion (which is what the 1st amendment forbids), i.e., as long as they don't mandate school prayers to whatever god or gods, then I'm okay with having those texts in the schools. I wouldn't want them remove the other books on mythology, psychology, and philosophy. And that's really what the Bible is. The sooner kids understand that, and not see it as something to be taken literally, something to kill and die for, the better. So no, it should not be banned. Let them see it for what it is, if they're so inclined.

  33.  @Thezuule1  Roughly 30% of what's in each gospel is unique to that particular gospel. John has a lot of unique stuff, since it's the only one that doesn't follow the general order of events. This happens in Matthew 27:52. It wasn't just any old person who was raised from the dead, but the "holy people...saints." But, yes, zombie outbreak indeed. :)

  36.  @RobertLee-m3b  Hebrew is just what peoples of other countries called the Israelites in the ancient days. Nazarene just means he was born in Nazareth. Joseph (Jesus' father) descended from the line of Judah (where the name Jew comes from). Everything Jesus taught came from the Torah, which is the Jewish holy scripture--as the other tribes were scattered. So Jesus was a Jew.

  37.  @RobertLee-m3b  Jesus said he did not come to destroy Judaism, but to fulfill it (Matt. 5:17). What he rejected was Scribal Law. He didn't say anything about Babylon. Though that is a very interesting idea. I don't know when Scribal Law started. So you might have a point there. The Pharisees (meaning "separated ones") devoted their lives to obeying everything the Scribes declared--separating themselves from everyday life. So he most certainly was a Jew. He just felt the pharisees put their version of the Torah above God, instead of practicing mercy and justice (Matt. 23:23).
