There are a lot of factors here, all of them poignant and pertinent. The Judge spoke kindly to him, encouraged him, instead of just processing him; the man had lost his way, but was good at heart; he admitted what he had done was wrong, and committed himself to getting better. I'm sure there are more. But if even one of those was missing, would this have worked out? People who commit crimes are still people. If anything, they are desperate people in desperate circumstances.
