Part of the problem is that there are only three qualifications to be President of the United States: "The Constitution lists only three qualifications for the Presidency — the President must be at least 35 years of age, be a natural born citizen, and must have lived in the United States for at least 14 years." That's it. So you could be in prison. You could be a spouse beater. As long as you check off those three prerequisites, you're good to go. So that comes from Article II, Section 1, Clause 5. Hard to find when this requirement was established, but I believe it was 1787. Back then, they never dreamed of career conman like Trump being brought up on federal charges, and possibly being in prison.

@emsleywyatt3400 "Because the system counts on the voters not to elect someone like him." Great point. At the founding our country, it would be insanity to imagine that so many people would support an obvious conman like Trump.

Just imagine. Someone could make a hit TV show, in which every episode could have a different nightmare/comedy of all the people who are qualified to be President.
