After formal education, it's up to individuals to continue to educate themselves. Many (most?) don't, and that's the actual problem.

This is not about formal education, but how we as individuals can choose whether to continue educating ourselves after we're done with school. For some, if they aren't forced to read and learn, they will stop. And because they aren't reinforcing what they learned, and continuing to practice critical thinking, they get to the point we see here.

He wasn't trying to establish. He said it doesn't matter which political team she plays for. Anyone is capable of letting their brain atrophy.

You mean Whoopie? That wasn't how I understand what she was saying. She was joking. She didn't say, "God explained to me how HE does things."

@SkyGemini-od4sb She didn't say she believed it. What she said could also be stated by anyone who didn't believe. "Technical thinking" is only a small part of logic and critical thinking. A larger part is the humility to admit when you don't know something, since that's the only way to learn it.

It doesn't matter which political team she plays for. Anyone can think that incorrectly, if they stop exercising their brain and learning new things.

@WalterWunder "And it is caused by religion." Sometimes. But religion isn't the only factor. Narrowing it down further, belief is big contributor. And believing isn't restricted to religion. If you believe you're right, then you won't bother learning--since you know it already.

@chinkasuyaro8983 It's a good point. No doubt. But she said what she said. I use Bible references a lot, when talking about the Bible: That's kinda what you do. And I'm not a believer. People are not simple. And cannot be categorized, especially when YOU DON'T KNOW: That should be the verification that concerns you, in that you don't have it.

Knowledge and critical thinking skills don't stay in your brain forever, unless you reinforce them. You have to both review and learn new things: not just learning any old things, but by practicing critical thinking, logic. The brain is like any other muscle: if you don't use it, it will atrophy.

@cpickles2996 "People who accept religion as fact are more likely to accept other 'facts' without question. Others are more prone to query and study the source and evidence for their facts." This is not necessarily true, or a given--certainly not for everyone. Plus, without religion, people are not guaranteed to "query and study the source and evidence for their facts."

Not always, but certainly often. Besides, if you stop doing everything that's mindless, what will you have left to do?

@helpfulcommenter Learning is learning. We can't know everything. So it's up to us to be humble enough to learn whatever crosses our paths, when we encounter it. I didn't know there was a difference; I never thought about it. Now I know.

Just if you have an unending appetite for mindless, bogus revelations. If you actually want to learn, the internet is an amazing tool.

@ChildlessDogGay4Harris My point is that what you said is made reality by what those people look for on the internet. If they looked for more new languages to learn, or science, then they wouldn't be that way. In other words, people are responsible for who they are.

Wrong is wrong. Doesn't matter which political team you play for.
