@Tsar-Czar "David isn't being fair. He is at a Christian Conference. Of course, he is going to give references to the Bible. To say otherwise is to act in bad faith." I considered this too. Thing is: You can talk to religious people about religion, without claiming God literally spoke to you, told you what to do, and you followed that voice. That's called psychosis.

@wendydabee You assume prayer is only people asking for things. While this may be true for some, it isn't true of everyone, and it isn't what the character Jesus, in the Biblical text said to do. He said, "God already knows what you have need of before you ask." And when asked how to pray, then, he said The Lord's Prayer: the foundation of which is "Thy will be done."

@wendydabee "I've not ever seen any religious person ever pray in the way you've described. EVER." You wouldn't actually see it, though, because they would do it in private--which is also how the Jesus character said prayer should be done. So there would be no evidence for you to see. There's an old saying: Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. And God does not pander to human wishes, according to the text in the Bible: God holds no favorites; and what is done is God's will, not ours; there is no one who can deliver from God's hand. I'm sure you've heard all kinds of things, from supposed intellectuals, who never studied the Bible intellectually, dispassionately, as someone who wasn't a believer. I am such a person though. And I'm certain there are others. I'd be happy to tell you more. You don't have to believe, in order to learn.

The practice of religion does NOT include God speaking to you literally and personally. That's called psychosis: You hear voices, and the voices tell you what to do, and you follow their orders.
