  1. A lot of people during the first couple centuries of our country, saw a parallel between their conquering of the Natives and the Israelites conquering the Promised Land. This was their promised land. And it was their "manifest destiny" to claim it all, no matter the cost. Similarly, slavery in this country was justified by the Curse of Ham. Ham was one of Noah's three sons. After the flood, when the ark landed on dry ground, Noah got really drunk and passed out in his tent. Ham went into the tent and saw his father naked. Because of that, God cursed him and his descendants. Each of the three sons colonized a certain area, and gave birth to a certain people. Ham chose what came to be called Canaan. But later Christians changed this to mean all people with black skin.
