It was in his book Mother Night, a story about an American living in Germany, when WWII started; the U.S. recruited him as a top secret spy, who passed coded messages to the Americans, while playing his assumed role of a Nazi radio broadcaster. Though it was all pretend for him, the coded words he was given to say were filled with typical Nazi hatred and bigotry. And his words did damage, regardless of whether or not he was playing a character.
