It is semantics, which has to do with words and their meanings. So let's look at the definitions. Nationalism: identification with one's own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations. Patriotism: the quality of being patriotic; devotion to and vigorous support for one's country. So nationalism has a built-in quality of excluding other nations. It is patriotism to the detriment of other nations. So nationalism is modified patriotism. That's why the Nazis (and all the Axis powers) were nationalists. Each of them believed their nation was superior, and that all other nations were inferior. That's what "America First" really means: America only, and heck with everyone else.
