Anti-intellectualism has always been in the United States, even before we won the Revolutionary War. Think about the pioneers: living on their own, and having no need to read. There wasn't even a printed English translation of the Bible until the 16th century. So they didn't even have that. From our beginning, there have always been people who lived in cites (towns/forts/etc), and people who live apart from civilization and culture--who don't want any government interference.
