First principles: Trump is a compulsive liar and a compulsive showman. Everything is a performance, from his freaky hair, to his orange face. So could he be putting on a show? To what end? To put on a show. It doesn't have to make more sense than that. "The play's the thing." In a way, Trump is like a megalomaniacal Andy Kaufman, who really really wants to be a dictator.
