  1. The cross platform thing is really common in the Netherlands, it exists basically at every train station that has crossing lines. Just between Eindhoven and Amsterdam (a very major every 10 min train north south connection) there is a cross platform stop in Eindhoven, Den Bosch and Utrecht for crossing lines that are more east-west connections. In Den Bosch (my hometown) the stopover is used a ton (probably about 40% of the passengers in the train lay over to the other one). It's insanely efficient. They even have planned that the train that arrives firist to leave last, because then the people can step out and wait for the other train, which the people step out and can very quickly go to the other side in an already offloaded train. 100s of people use this layover every 30 min and it literally takes 2 min. The efficiency is insane.
