  1. He was a trained swordsman before he came to Japan. He didn't have to learn swordsmanship in 15 months from the Japanese. In fact, the fact that he already travelled several parts of the world, means that he had the relatively unique position of having learned several vastly different fighting styles, rather than only Japanese swordsmanship. If anything he had the unique position to have a huge advantage to become a better swordsman than anyone around him. There's absolutely no reason to assume that Japanese swordfighting styles are somehow better than other styles of combat.
