  1. I think one of the main reasons the US is so obese is actually a lack of public healthcare. When there is public healthcare the government has a massive incentive to keep the population healthy, since a significant part of the budget is allocated to healthcare (in the Netherlands for example the government spends about 30% of all their money on healthcare), so there is a public demand for being healthy and the government has huge incentives for decreasing the demand of healthcare, hence the governments efforts to reduce unhealthy practices. A significant portion of what can be found in US supermarkts is literally illegal in the EU for this exact reason. The sugar tax found in many European countries is effectively the same idea. It's basically like well you can eat unhealthy if you really want, but you're effectively paying for your own heart surgery this way through extra taxes. Also there are actual limits to what is straight up legal. Coca cola has a different recipe in the EU for this very reason I've heard, because the amount of sugar they put in the US recipe is literally illegal over here. Meanwhile in the US the healthcare industry is massively profiting from unhealthy people and have absolutely no incentive to stop it. Let alone the extremely powerful food lobby, which is dominated by a very small amount of companies with very deep lobbying pockets.
