  1. The 'why' to me seems quite simple: it's way more efficient and doesn't require fossil fuels. There are just some really major engineering concerns, so it's definitely not near future, but I wouldn't be surprised if earth has a space elevator at some point in the future, it's probably just closer to 200 years than 20 years in the future. The heavier the load the more expensive rockets become. So if we want to mine the moon and mars and stuff it would be quite valuable to have space elevators.
