Red is too strong a colour for the amount of background space. Swamps your attention away from the main figure. Which should be dominant in a portrait.

@osric1730 Self portraits is purely about the figure. Visual Heirarchy of the primary focal point is paramount. Background dominating the subject adds confusion on viewing it.

@osric1730 My bad, - it's not a self portrait. I understand your view but for me the red is overwhelming on the senses and visually overloaded.

@osric1730 Showing a stately King is passe, but they could modernise easily without the dramatic rouge stong colour. Which works well with the right setting, Francis Bacon's unsettling dramatic themes springs to mind. In comparison with a such simple face the harsh eclipsing contrast doesn't mix well. ....Maybe the artist wants the viewer to feel uncomfortable.
