  1. A 12 lb weapon is fine if you don't have to do dismounted manuevers, but that's just too fucking heavy if someone has to carry more than their rifle, water, armor, and a very light assault pack.

  2. I think we've pushed the 5.56 to its limit; look at the civilian market for those weapons in the US and you see the absolute peak of the technology.

  4. 12 pounds is too much for anyone that has to do dismounted manuevers a lot. The War on Terror was a weird time, but the fight we're preparing for will be with bombs, missiles, and artillery. All a rifle has to do is pin the enemy long enough for something big to show up.
