  1. Yeah, Samurai definitely did fight like this in the era, but they did it just to make a point, knowing they would lose. Like, once time, a military rebellion ended with a regiment of samurai attack a fortified position...with swords and lances against cannons and guns. Yeah, it went about as well as one might expect.

  5. I think that's more of what I'd call a "conscript" than a professional soldier. There are those who dedicated their lives to war and those are the professional warrior class in modern nations.
