  1. The strategic factors are much more interesting. ATGMs, winter, and F-35s are scary, but that doesn't compare to the US freezing the financial assets of Putin's supporters. If the US freezes everything, Russia can cut off natural gas and oil exports to Europe, but Europe is more politically stable than Russia, right now. Putin needs to win and take Ukraine or he will continue to look even more weak, which the one thing that can remove him from power. If he can't keep his supporters' pocket heavy, he loses the game. If worst comes to worst, the US does have enough energy available to support Europe for a very short period, but it's hard to say if it's long enough for Putin's control of the state to fail. Putin has bit off more than he could chew; he is kinda counting on China to be aggressive and pull US attention away from Europe, but that's not how China is going to win. All China has to do is wait, but Putin simply doesn't have that kind of time. China has a good 20 years, Russia has a few left to do what it needs to do
