  1. I used to teach English at various Japanese elementary schools. I think most grades now typically have "English Lessons", but really they aren't proper lessons just English Activity classes to try and encourage an interest in English. They might only have say 10 lessons per year ! So really they aren't going to learn too much. Definitely no splitting of children into beginners and advanced ! I understand they are transitioning to a model where the 5th and 6th graders may have more formal instruction in English amounting to up to 3 classes per week, but I don't know how far this has progressed. That is probably what Aiko was referring to. Anyway they seem like a great family.
