+Julian Serradilla Public parks aren't spaces for camping in Japan ! Generally speaking the only people that sleep in public parks are the homeless. Of course nothing is stopping you from sleeping under a tree if you want. I'm not sure how local officials would react to someone who isn't Japanese doing it for an extended period though.

Good video ! I think you are brave to tackle it because it is obviously a complex topic that is difficult to do justice to. One thing I'm curious about though, what was the homeless guy powering with all those solar panels ?! I'm wondering what devices he had ? Does he prefer apple products ? Has he got a Nintendo Switch ?

Most homeless people are genuinely homeless, but it is true in many locations that there are fake homeless and scammers. If people really want to help the homeless it is better not to give them money directly, but to support charities that help the homeless.

+Julian Serradilla . I'm just saying that I've never seen anyone 'camping' in a public park in Japan except for the homeless and their blue tarps. The extended period comment was not related to the OP, rather it was in case people were considering setting up camp for the duration of their vacation as an alternative to air bnb. You seem like an expert in this area, do you actually have experience camping in urban parks in Japan ? Perhaps you can share some helpful tips. It is probable doable with careful selection of site, but honestly it is more trouble than it is worth and you could be hassled by the police, night guards (suspicious gaijin camping) etc. I just don't think Japan is a good place for 'freedom camping'.

I struggle to understand this. WW II ended a long time ago, even people that were children then would be 80+ yrs old. What is the pathway a Japanese person would take to end up homeless in Seattle's china town ?

Seriously I wouldn't want to have a bipolar disorder or similar in Japan. My feeling is that they are quite far behind many other countries with respect to patient's rights etc. And there is still a lot of stigma in this area. See this recent tragic case for example https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jul/13/new-zealand-man-dies-tied-bed-japanese-hospital I was shocked because I think it is very rare in most modern psychiatric care to keep people restrained like that.

That is probably a good idea for a video though. Live as a homeless in Japan for a week and see what it is like trying to survive. (not saying Greg needs to do it though, I just mean someone might like to do it). Also it might be hard to do the topic justice.

+Adrianna Kaiser Thanks for your insights ! I have no doubt there are many homeless people - and as housing affordability worsens you see more and more homelessness or people under housing stress. I was questioning the original premise about Japanese people being homeless in Seattle due to WW II ? Which seems kind of bizarre. Maybe I misunderstood the original comment...

Could be odd, I don't know how they would react. Maybe they wouldn't want to accept due to pride, maybe they would resent it I don't know. Probably I wouldn't get involved. Having said that I used to live in Japan and go jogging at night in the park, there were a number of homeless living there and and some were quite friendly and would try and use English phrases on me. Ha ha. Generally speaking though Japanese homeless very much keep to themselves. Like the video says they don't ask for money, wave signs or scream some random obscenities.
