The best history teacher I had in high school made the point that the American Revolution was in fact a conservative movement to restore the status quo that had existed in the colonies before the reign of George III. When parliament tried to increase their control of us, we rebelled.

Most Americans don't realize, and it is rarely taught, that the Declaration of Independence is a law. It's an act of congress, and the first American legislation that diverges from English law. In it, we not only cite the reasons for claiming independence from Britain, but this is the legal writ in which we did so. On July 3, 1776, Americans were subjects. On July 4, 1776, the American people claimed our own sovereignty. We then proceeded to demonstrate that sovereignty by taking up arms to expel British forces from our country.
