  1. Your mention of traditional French torture reminded me of Mark Twain's essay, "The French and the Comanche", in which he compares their savagery. Before I read that, I had no idea of how vicious French governments had been historically.

  2. History was very poorly taught in my high school, and I was in Fairfax County, Virginia, one of the wealthier suburbs of Washington, DC. I started reading history on my own in my mid-20s, and I remember being quite angry at what was left out of the standard government school party line.
