A mountain lion can kill you if you're not paying attention, but a full-grown man squaring off with a mountain lion has a decent chance of hurting it enough to make it run away or even killing it, although he certainly won't come out unscathed. If you're hiking or riding where there are mountain lions roaming around, you should be carrying a heavy caliber sidearm. .38 or .44 should do.
