Slavery was pervasive globally from prehistory until a group of English Christians in the late 1700s decided that it's morally repugnant, and set about convincing their government to fight it, which England did all alone for some 70 years before the rest of Christendom was shamed into helping out. Western civilization's aversion to slavery is why its no longer considered normal, and this was over the objections of basically everybody else: the Muslims, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Indians, the Africans, etc, etc.
Any guilt-peddler trying to get a handout from me for slavery will be told in no uncertain terms that I never owned a slave, my family lost men in the war to end slavery in America, and I don't owe him a goddamned thing.
