Americans spend more per student than most of the countries whose students outperform ours. We don't get what we pay for, because it gets plundered by bureaucrats before the money gets to the classroom. -jcr

  3. I've certainly met many people who were raised as only children of affluent parents, who were basically helpless (and damned near worthless) in the workplace. One of the schmucks I worked with some years back was only employed because his parents would disown him if didn't pretend to make some effort. He was pretty much just marking time until he'd inherit the money his father had earned.

  4. Apple never did require academic credentials. I worked there three times, starting in '02. As long as I can remember, they've always said "or equivalent experience" on the job postings.
