  1. Historically, " western" meant west of the holy land. Europe was west, China was east. In the USA, "western" usually refers to Cowboy territory: Texas, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, etc. California is as west as we've got, but we don't usually refer to California as western. We tend to call it the Left Coast.
