They're also quite routine here in the Silicon valley for any prospective employee so that the employer can talk about work in progress that's not public information yet.

If I was a judge and this came across my desk, the victim would get the car back, the loan would be paid in full by the dealer, the person they sold the car to would be awarded double the value of the car, and the dealer's business license would be revoked. Punishment must be severe enough to prevent reoffending.

  15. I knew a man who was an investor in a business I was working for, and he was going to co-sign a line of credit for this busines. Bank turned down the application because the business was too new, so he withdrew his 30 million dollars from the bank and told their senior management that their loan officer was incompetent. They got to watch him take his 30 mil in a cashier's check across the street to deposit with their competition.

  26. Many years ago, a company called SHL Systemhouse asked me to travel to DC for an interview, and promised to pay my expenses. I went, did the interview, seemed to go OK, but the hiring manager I talked to transferred, and the position was closed. Ok, no biggie, but they owed me. I called the recruiter a few times, always went straight to voice mail, and then I tried calling her from a different number and she picked up. I asked where my money was. She promised I'd get it in a week. A week later, I had a check for exactly HALF of what they owed, down to the penny.   Called her again, left a message saying that unless I was paid in full immediately, I would get the word out to other guys who did what I do, and they would find it basically impossible to recuit any engineers in my specialty. They paid up.

My sister (who is a lawyer) called the towing company's attorney, and I got a check by fedex the following day for $500 to make me go away. That covered the detailing pretty well.

  37. Many years ago, I had a run-in with Cox cablevision. Their franchise agreement required them to wire up anyone in the county who wanted it, and they lied to me and told me that my neighbor had refused to let them run a line across his property. I went and talked to him about it, and he told me nobody had ever asked him. So, I called up the county cable administrator, whose full-time job is to threaten Cox with losing their franchise, and they showed up within the week to connect me any my neighbor.

I just went to my landlord's credit union last week to deposit my rent check, as I have done every month for well over a year, and the new teller there demanded my ID before she would process the deposit. I told her I didn't bring any ID, since I was giving THEM money, and it doesn't even matter who I am, what matters is whether the check I'm depositing clears. She remained pig-headed about it. I waited until another teller was available, and deposited it as usual.   If it happens again at that branch, I'll tell my landlord that I'm not going there anymore, and he can drop by the house to pick up the check in the future. I'll let him tear them a new asshole.

  42. Before we all had cars, in many places in these United States, horse theft was routinely punished by hanging the perp on the spot. A theft that deprived the victim of transportation was much more serious than stealing money, because it could be a matter of life and death. I would be in favor of explicitly authorizing anyone who catches a thief in the act of taking anything that renders a vehicle inoperable to beat the perp unconscious, and if he dies, nothing of value is lost.
