  1. Many years ago, a company called SHL Systemhouse asked me to travel to DC for an interview, and promised to pay my expenses. I went, did the interview, seemed to go OK, but the hiring manager I talked to transferred, and the position was closed. Ok, no biggie, but they owed me. I called the recruiter a few times, always went straight to voice mail, and then I tried calling her from a different number and she picked up. I asked where my money was. She promised I'd get it in a week. A week later, I had a check for exactly HALF of what they owed, down to the penny.   Called her again, left a message saying that unless I was paid in full immediately, I would get the word out to other guys who did what I do, and they would find it basically impossible to recuit any engineers in my specialty. They paid up.

  2. Can't they get a federal court order to sieze it from whatever bank the city uses for accounts payable?
