SpaceX is switching to liquid methane for the superheavy/starship system. They rejected hydrogen due to the difficulty of handling and producing the needed quantities to allow the very ambitious launch schedules they're aiming for.

The main hurdle is bringing the cost of hydrogen down. Once it's cheaper than jet fuel per unit of energy, the switch will happen. Many people are working on bringing that cost down. $1/Kg should do it.

@TheEvilmooseofdoom Handling and storage of hydrogen is a solved problem, ever since the Apollo program.

No moreso than a similar volume of jet fuel. You're unlikely to see an optimal fuel-air mixture detonation in either case.
