  1. My uncle volunteered for the army on Dec 8, 1941. He tried like hell to get into combat, but he scored to high on a test and they made him a clerk. He was eventually allowed to transfer to a unit that would have been part of the invasion force, but the atomic bombs made that unnecessary. I'm glad he never got a purple heart, as much as I am grateful for all the soldiers, sailors, and marines who did get them.
