  1. Calling ground-loop heat pumps "geothermal" is marketing BS that started in the early 80s, as I recall. The heat they scavange is solar heat accumulated in the summer. A true geothermal source would be a deep well that obtains heat that started in the ground: the residual heat of the earth's aggregation, and heat created by radioactive decay in the core and mantle conducting up through the crust.
