@tomdynia9951 I just checked Wikipedia, and as I thought, magenta (or minus-green as one is inclined to call it after struggling with negative-positive colour photography) was one of the new aniline dyes, invented in 1859. Mauve was just a bit earlier, IIRC. W. says the inventor called it fuchsine at first, but that name doesn't seem to have ever been widely used (wouldn't have done at all in the age of dogging).
