And it gets more difficult, because a lot of what we know about ancient Greek and Latin religion depends on literary sources, and it's hard to think of anyone worshipping the Olympian deities of Homer or Ovid, for example; but we know that they did, seriously. So is the Zeus of Homer the same as the Zeus of a temple sacrifice? And for the Northern gods, a lot of what we "know" is from Snorri, who is pretty certainly telling good stories, not evoking the daily experience of contact with the diving. @IONATVS
